Although all of us would love to take a scenic drive to upstate to spend the weekend relaxing in nature, camping in style in one of our canvas tents, and finishing that juicy novel reclined in an adirondack chair, sometimes duty calls and you just can’t make it out of the city. No worries! We’ve got you covered with a selection of our favorite places to unplug, relax, and unwind right in NYC!
Picnic with city views at Gantry Plaza Park
Just across the bridge from Manhattan, this hidden gem is the perfect respite after a busy city day, and you’ll probably be the only one of your friends who knows about it! Long Island City, Queens is home to Gantry Plaza State Park- a beautiful spot for a picnic, a lounge break, or a refreshing workout. There’s even a playground for the kiddos and excellent waterfront views of the skyline!
A Relaxing Afternoon at Aire Ancient Baths
You don’t have to be in Rome to do as the Romans do! Live it up like a European and take a dip in the warm waters of our city’s very own ancient bath house! You can do everything from contemplating your next camping trip in a relaxing thermal bath, be pampered with a massage and trip to the steam room, or drink in your newfound serenity with a luxurious red wine bath. We can feel the calm washing over us just thinking about this place!
Hammock Grove at Governor’s Island
Spend the day lounging in a hammock with your favorite novel at one of our favorite hidden gems in the city! Yes, there is an entire “grove” of hammocks on this popular isle, and yes, it is just as awesome as it sounds! Bonus: You can grab a quick bite right on the island, there are plenty of scenic bike trails, and you’ll be relaxing underneath great views of our city’s skyline!
Meditation at Dream House
It’s hard to believe that a space like this exists in the city, but it’s a lifesaver when you need a zen-filled pause from being squeezed in the subway and contemplating the value of city life in relation to your rising rent costs. Enter the space and you’ll immediately be illuminated in glowing light and have your senses relaxed by Dream House’s immersive soundscape. Stay for a little or stay for a lot- Dream House will get you re-centered!
Rowboats & Canoes in Central Park
Enjoy the best pocket of calm our city has to offer by heading up to Central Park and taking a slow row across the lake! The Loeb Boathouse rents rowboats and kayaks from April to October- the perfect weekend activity for small groups, and after you unwind on the lake you can head over to the Boathouse’s bar and restaurant for an indulgent dinner!
